“Ravenala madagascarniensis” – native to the Island of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean and commonly known as the Travellers Palm – served for many centuries as an emergency drinking supply for travellers in need. More intriguing however is the fact that the tree, due to its photosynthetic fan in an east-west orientation, might have served as a natural compass allowing travellers to orient themselves on their journeys. Myth or reality?
